Spring brings all new problems for car owners

Although the spring period is usually viewed as a period of rebirth and new beginnings, car owners are being warned to avoid having their new start tainted by unnecessary car insurance claims as spring time brings new problems.

Firstly AA Insurance has issued tentative warnings to drivers who will need to negotiate the increased amount of motorcyclists appearing on Britain’s roads. Spring time usually signals the return of the two wheeled motor vehicle, as drivers dust down their power bikes from winter hibernation.

Danger

It is estimated that 1.6 million motorbikes will return to the road causing confusion for those drivers who have gotten used to driving without the potential blindside hazard.

Simon Douglas, AA Insurance director, said: “At this time of year the big danger to bikers is ‘road rust’ among drivers who have lost the habit of looking out for bikes. Bikes can be repaired or replaced, but bikers cannot.”

Motorbikes are just one of many things that could happen to drivers during the onset of flowering blooms, as the clocks went forward on the weekend drivers who would like to avoid a claim on their car insurance policy should take heed of the hazardous nature of the roads in the mornings, as many motorists will be making their way to work in the dark.

Change
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has gone on to explain that decreased visibility or unfortunate surprises could increase the likelihood of a claim.

Neil Greig, director of IAM policy and research, said: "For the first few weeks of the clock change, motorists will need to get used to driving in darker conditions and take extra care."

Despite these warnings motorists will always find time to drive their vehicles, in good weather or bad, especially considering such recent findings.

In fact the improving weather and longer daytime hours will ultimately mean that accidents are more likely as motorists spend more time in their vehicles. But recent research from Admiral shows that the average UK driver spends more time in their car than at home.

The report shows that at least one in ten drivers in the UK spend a longer time in their car than home with the figure rising to one in five for those who live in London.

Sue Longthorn, managing director of Admiral, said: "In a world where social networking and being constantly available are so valued, it might be that motorists are […] seeking some solace in their cars."
