The new Bentley Speed

Make way for the new Continental GT Speed, a model that can trace its heritage back to the first Speed models of the Twenties. Self-levelling air-suspension sits 10mm lower at the front and 15mm lower at the rear to finish a look that is definitely more assertive than the standard automobile's. The work which has gone into maximising the performance has been much more complicated than simply enlarging the boost pressure on the 6.0-litre W12 engine's twin turbochargers. In truth, the engine has been noticeably altered with new internals, whilst a revised exhaust system, cam timing chain and new electronic management system combine to enhance the performance across the rev range.

As a consequence, the linear torque delivery that Bentley is happy to list as a key characteristic of all its autos remains unspoiled. As well as revised suspension, there is a more responsive gearbox and an uprated stability control system to match the 48bhp increase in performance.

The correct steering is still light on feedback, and there is a bent for the Speed to deviate off line under full power which is maybe no surprise, given the auto's 600bhp but generally it feels more concerning than ever. Which is just as well, as the hushed cabin complete with its finely stitched leather seats, wood veneers and machined aluminum dash trim is a place in which you should be able to relax. So are there any downsides?

Well, presuming you've got the obligatory money clout to find the velocity's £137,500 asking price, you had better prepare for no less than 1 or 2 minor disappointments. And it is a shame the engine only meets EU Dollar IV emissions standards, instead of the impending Euro Buck V laws, whilst a 396g / km CO2 figure is at the top end of the scale. The carbon ceramic brakes alone add £10,000 to the basic cost. And the good news is the automobile lives up to its astronomical cost.
